Tennis suits first-time bettors because there is no draw in the way: one player wins, and the other does not. That clarity is why match winner odds are easy to read. But a sport with constant scoring also has constant live markets, and that is where money slips away. Here is a clear walk through the scoring system, the markets, and the habits worth building. Examples are hypothetical, and this guide comes from the official KG999 partner site.
A quick scoring refresher
A match is made of sets, a set is made of games, and a game is made of points. Within a game the points run love, 15, 30, 40 and game, with deuce when both players reach 40. The first to six games wins a set, usually by two clear games, with a tie-break at six-all in most formats. Matches are best of three sets for most events, and best of five at some major tournaments, mostly in men's competitions.
Knowing the format matters because it changes both the markets offered and the chance of an upset. Best of five rewards the stronger player more than best of three.
Core tennis markets
Match winner is the headline bet. Set betting predicts the exact score, for example 2-0 or 2-1, with higher odds for less likely scores. Game handicap gives one player a head start in total games, and total games asks whether the combined number of games will be over or under a line. Some books also list first-set winner, tie-break yes/no and player to win a specific set.
The following table uses made-up prices to show the idea.
| Market | Example selection | Hypothetical odds | What it tests |
|---|---|---|---|
| Match winner | Player A to win | 1.45 | Overall quality gap |
| Set betting | Player A wins 2-0 | 1.95 | Dominance, not just winning |
| Game handicap | Player B +5.5 games | 1.85 | Whether the underdog competes |
| Total games | Over 22.5 games | 1.90 | Closeness of the match |
| Tie-break in match | Yes | 2.60 | Serve strength of both players |
Things that affect tennis prices
Surface is a big one: clay, grass and hard courts reward different styles. A strong server tends to produce more tie-breaks and fewer breaks of serve, which pushes totals in particular directions. Fatigue from a long previous match, a short turnaround, or an injury concern can swing a price. Our guide to why odds move explains how the market reacts to this kind of news.
Tennis also has retirement rules. If a player quits mid-match, the sportsbook may void some bets and settle others, depending on how many sets have been completed. Read the market rules before you place any bet.
Live tennis: fast and tempting
Odds change after nearly every point, and many books list next-game winner and point-by-point markets. It feels like you can react quickly, but the price already includes the latest point. If you want to try in-play, our live betting guide covers cash-flow habits that help. Set a hard limit on the number of in-play bets per match.
Prices follow the formula covered on the betting odds page, so you can work out the implied probability of any line.
